Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
FAQ: Is it OK to mix cedar and pine furniture, and what is the difference between them?
A: We mix cedar and pine all the time, and it looks great. The cedar and pine we use is nearly identical in color. The main difference is that the cedar tends to have more knots and more streaks of color to the wood. Many of our pine dressers, chests and night stands have cedar handles and/or trim. We have customers who purchase pine beds and cedar dressers, and vice versa, and it all looks very nice together.
Q: What size logs do you use?
A: The logs in our beds vary greatly—from 3 - 8 inches in diameter. The cedar logs vary a little more. Logs in the cedar low post beds we offer range in diameter from 4 to 5 ½ inches wide, while logs in the cottage beds are generally in the 6-7 inch range. If you want the look of larger logs, please order accordingly.
Q: Are there any differences in strength between the cedar and pine log beds?
A: All of our beds are extremely strong, durable and stable, so that should not be an issue in selecting the log bed that’s right for you.
Q: What is the difference between German-peeled and hand-sanded logs?
A: After the drying-process is complete, German-peeled logs are rotated against a set of spinning blades. The end result is a hand-drawn peeled look, generally requiring additional sanding so that it shouldn’t give you a splinter. German-peeled logs may still have some rough spots, however, and can, under the right circumstances, snag a sweater or hose. If you want your logs smoother than this, you need to select the finishing option. Under this option we hand-sand the logs down so that they are very smooth.
Q: Can I use a standard size mattress with your beds?
A: Yes. All of our beds take standard size mattresses. The low post beds include a metal frame that fits a standard size twin, full, king or queen mattress. Some of the beds will also fit a California King-size bed frame if that is what you have. The rustic cedar beds have metal supports for the mattress and box springs, where the box spring drops into the metal frame. Once again, these beds are built to hold standard size mattresses. If you want a California King bed, you will have to let us know as that is a special order. We have also made longer twin beds for taller people, where the twin mattresses are 80 inches long (like in a Queen bed). These kind of longer mattresses are commonly available in college towns (for tall students). The bottom line is, if you can find the mattress you need, we can generally make the bed to fit! Standard Mattress Sizes are as follows: Twin: 38” x 74” Full: 54” x 74” Queen: 60” x 80” King: 76” x 80” California King: “ 72” x 84” “Tall Boy” (or girl!) Twin: 38” x 80”

Q: What is the advantage of finishing my furniture?
A: Outside furniture will weather to a gray if left unfinished. Inside furniture will darken slightly, but will collect dust and dirt if left unfinished. A protective finish will keep outside furniture from weathering, and protect inside furniture from crayon marks, fingerprints, and grime that may accumulate in a dusty environment. Some people prefer to finish their furniture themselves, others leave it unfinished, while many others have us finish it for them. In the end, it’s all a matter of personal preference.
